“Afzal has a long-term goal of returning to education as a teacher, inspired by mentors who guided him along his journey.”
Afzal’s story
Eton College
Afzal joined Eton College for sixth form through the Orwell Award, and had a mentor who helped him navigate his new environment. When the pandemic hit halfway through his first year, Afzal adapted to remote learning, and despite the challenges, he found unique opportunities. After getting involved in the debating society, he joined the England debating team and eventually became the president of Eton’s debating society.
Eton’s supportive environment and encouragement from friends pushed him academically and socially, instilling a sense of independence. Inspired by the broad opportunities available, Afzal decided to pursue university in the United States, where he could explore a wide range of subjects before choosing a major. He received full financial aid to attend Princeton, which offered him both academic freedom and financial security compared to staying in London.
Now in his final year at Princeton majoring in Economics, Afzal continues to engage with debating, travelling internationally with the Princeton Debate Club to competitions in places like Vietnam, Madrid, and Panama. He remains closely connected to the SpringBoard community through the RNCSF’s SummerFest programme, which has offered him ongoing support and friendships with other students from similar backgrounds.
Looking ahead, Afzal plans to enter corporate America but has a long-term goal of returning to education as a teacher, inspired by mentors who guided him along his journey. He also hopes to explore a role in politics, where he could make a difference and advocate for educational access for all.
