Yuriel's story

Yuriel comes from a single parent, low-income family in the heart of Tottenham, London.  The culture in his local community is one that seeks to stereotype young men like Yuriel.  He experienced challenges as a younger student – he struggled to find his place within the school community at the start of secondary school yet, inspired by the example of his mother and older sister, turned it around to be awarded a Royal SpringBoard bursary for sixth form.  Yuriel made such a positive impression at his new boarding school, that after a year he was made Head Boy.   He is now at LSE studying Economics.

"Boarding School has forwarded my life in unprecedented ways. The experience has given me a lot that I will forever be grateful for. I am more confident now, inspired and have plans in future to help people like me.

The best thing about boarding school was the vast array of people that I was exposed to.  In particular, as a result of attending Millfield School whereby 20% of its pupils are international, I have been gifted with the lesson of how to interact with persons of different culture, religion and morals.

If I had not gone to boarding school, I would have been a totally new person just because of the complete paradoxical environment I would have been faced with.  I would not have been equipped with the skill of how to communicate with varied characters of people; however, most importantly, how to live away from home and to adapt to unfamiliar surroundings.

Right now, I am hoping to study Actuarial Science at London School of Economics, with the aspiration of going to America to further study the science through masters and PHD, to eventually become a highly qualified actuary.

My experience with Royal Springboard and boarding school has been an immense blessing which I will be eternally grateful for. It is the reason why I continually mention that the best two years of my life were spent at Millfield School. Royal Springboard ensures that any child is able to search, find and then fulfil the foundation of their dreams."
