Kristin’s story

28/06/18

"I grew up and live in East London. I have had to survive the gang culture and deprivation of my community.  I have nearly been stabbed multiple times, rushed by gangs and many people have tried to rob me. I have watched my friends die or go to prison because of gang violence.  I come from a dysfunctional family.  I have been through abuse and grew up in a foster home.  My parents suffer from mental health issues and family trauma.  I have been made homeless and financially deprived by my family.  I have had to sofa surf and find comfort/security in multiple adoptive families and friends' homes. I lost my adoptive Mother last year and still suffer from the grief.  I am Black, Afro Caribbean, born in London, UK, but my background is Bajan (Barbados), Trinidadian (Trinidad & Tobago) and Guyanese (Guyana).  I am 21 years old.

My experience at boarding school has helped to guide me on my journey in life.  It has elevated my standard of living, mindset and business mind frame.  My family have been granted access to the same network and privileges due to my achievements and by becoming an alumnus of Royal Springboard and EYLA.  I regularly go back to my community to present and give motivational speeches.  I do this with the aim to build a bridge between the present generation and the next.  To help link them onto a platform that immensely benefited me.

The best thing about boarding school is the friendships I made and maintain to this present date.  Today, they either support my business or elevate my mindset by keeping me focused and updating me on their progress in life.  This motivates me to persevere through any hardships I encounter because I am around the right people.  Continuing on this road to success will one day benefit you and me.

Had I not gone to boarding school, I would probably have been consumed by the negative environment around me.  I would not have achieved what I have today, nor have developed the relationships, or confidence that I now have in myself.

I am now in my final year of University studying Law. I have my own company - an online clothing brand called Alpha Apparel Ltd - and am pursuing a career in the entertainment industry.

I aspire to become a successful Entrepreneur, Landowner, Actor/Musician and Barrister in Commercial Law.

I hold Royal Springboard and my boarding school, King Edward’s Witley, very dear to me as the two institutions have made me the strong and ambitious man I am today.  Nothing is too big to achieve, I can become anything I put my mind to.  I speak my life into existence.  And I thank these organisations for existing and developing me to become a successful individual, but most importantly for teaching me the principle and significance of giving back to your community that may be in need.
